An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale has shaken New Zealand, 7Km just southeast of Christchurch, at midnight local time, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Friday.
There was no immediate tsunami warning. Previously stated that the USGS earthquake measuring 7.3 Richter.
The epicenter was in the depth of 66Km and the quake struck at 1635 GMT (23:25 pm).
Christchurch, on the east coast South Island, is New Zealand's second largest city with a population of around 342 000 people.
"There is no tsunami threat to destroy the existing broad, based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," said Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
