Evangelical church in Gainesville, Florida, United States, seem to still be running its plan to burn the Koran during the nine-year commemorating the tragedy of the collapse of the WTC twin towers on September 11.
Leader of The Dove World Outreach Center, Pastor Terry Jones, confirmed the action was done to give a special message for radical Islamic groups.
''We must send a clear message to radical Islamic elements. We can no longer be controlled and dominated by the threat and fear that they spread,''said Jones told the Wall Street Journal. He said that in response to the insistence that the plan was canceled, especially those delivered by the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan General David Petraeus who worried about burning the Koran will only threaten the lives of U.S. troops there.
Earlier in an interview with AFP in July, Jones pointed to Islam and Islamic law is responsible for the tragedy of September 11. ''We're going to burn the Koran because we think it's time Christians, churches, politicians to stand up and say no, that Islam and sharia law is not accepted in America,''he said.
General Petraeus said the action would be burning the Koran only propaganda material against the Taliban fighters for the United States throughout the Muslim world. He said that when interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Tuesday (7 / 9). ''That could endanger the troops and could endanger the overall effort,''he said anxiously.
Jones was not too give feedback on statements from Petraeus. He only says the U.S. war commander in Afghanistan's legitimate to say that.
